Signage isn’t just about putting up a logo it’s about engineering, precision, and problem solving to ensure a seamless fit, especially when dealing with complex architectural features. Some companies achieve this quietly 'in the shadows' always putting the client first. One such is Albert Smith Signs, truly a quiet achiever in our industry! Andy McCourt has more.
Following the radius of the building - a tricky challenge for the new Coles site, but not beyond Albert Smith Signs
Sometimes, rarely, a story lands in one's lap and is in your own backyard. For nearly 2 years I've seen my nearest Coles demolished, the site redeveloped to include appartments and the emergence of a welcome new Coles for the good citizens of Lindfield, Roseville and Killara, NSW. Like all projects of this nature, it has not been without challenges but now the signs are going up and the internal fitout is underway. A chance finding of a LinkedIn post on how the tricky curved main Coles sign was built and installed by Albert Smith Signs is an example how our industry can shine and deliver for major brands.
For this Coles project in Lindfield, the Seven Hills branch of Albert Smith Signs tackled the challenge of installing a massive 6.5m wide x 1.7m high curved flex-face illuminated sign that had to perfectly follow the building's radius. To get this right, Albert Smith went beyond standard site measurements and conducted a 4D site scan to capture the exact curvature of the façade.
Using this data, the company's wizards designed and fabricated a curved aluminium frame and tensioned flex-face system, ensuring the sign would not only look great but also seamlessly be installed on site, facing the busy Pacific Highway. Nothing was left to chance before heading to site; an extensive pre installation test was conducted, assembling and tensioning the flex in a controlled environment to make sure every component would come together flawlessly when installed.
The end result? A bold, high impact Coles sign that integrates perfectly with the building’s architecture, maintaining brand presence while showcasing technical precision.
It took a massive effort from all the team at Albert Smith for their commitment to quality and innovation. This one was a great example of how planning and testing can make all the difference in signage execution.
Albert Smith Signs is Brisbane headquartered and is still in the Smith family, the business being founded by Samuel Smith in 1873, making rubber stamps - 152 years ago! Today, his great grandsons run the business which is now global, with operations in China and the Philippines, as well as Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Examples of the company's high-level work reveal a veritable 'A-List' of well known Australian and global brands.
With the new Coles opening due next month, we can't wait to boost our Fly-Bys - and admire the signage of course!
